John Alfred Swan historical sketches and letters, 1869-1877.

Sketches prepared for (or given to) H.H. Bancroft, with related letters, providing biographical information and accounts of his life after arrival in California in 1843, his trading ventures and coastal voyages, shipwrecks on the coast, manners and customs of native Californians, the "civil war" of 1844-48, the battles of Natividad and San Pascual, and anecdotes about T.O. Larkin and W.T. Sherman.

Ezekial Thatcher was clerk of the Parkville School District, Shasta County, Calif. He emigrated to California from Pennsylvania in 1850 and helped establish the first school district in the Parkville area. He is descended from the Thatchers of Uffington, England, the same family as Denis Thatcher, husband of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. From the description of H.H.
